Editorial

Welcome to the launch edition of Coaching Today.ÌýWhen I was appointed as editor for this,ÌýÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ’s 7th and newest divisional journal, I wasÌýaware that, along with representing the voice ofÌýÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Coaching division, the key role of thisÌýpublication would be to provide a fresh forumÌýfor discussion, debate and knowledge-sharingÌýin this wonderfully diverse and rapidly changingÌýprofession of ours.

Any new publication on coaching launchedÌýtoday has to acknowledge and celebrate theÌýbreadth, depth and rich variety of the coachingÌýworld. It also has to take into account that, as aÌýprofession, there is still much debate aroundÌýwhat coaching actually is, how it is used andÌýhow we differentiate it from counselling,Ìýpsychotherapy and other therapeuticÌýinterventions. Finally, it has to acknowledgeÌýthat, as a platform for debate and discussionÌýand sharing of best practice, it will most likely askÌýmore questions than it answers, which seemsÌýsomehow apt for a coaching journal.

I hope that you will agree that in this first issue,Ìýwe have the coaching conversation off to a goodÌýstart. In two leading articles, Chair of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏÌýCoaching Linda Aspey and Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ’s CEO LaurieÌýClarke each tell the story of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ’s relationshipÌýto coaching and the emergence of the coachingÌýdivision from their own unique standpoints. KateÌýAnthony and DeeAnna Nagel of the Online CoachÌýInstitute look at the implications of advances inÌýtechnology and the practice and ethics of usingÌýnew technologies in your coaching practice.ÌýElsewhere, we explore the issues of resilienceÌýand boundaries in relation to coaching andÌýtherapy, and also that between coach and clientÌýin articles by coach and psychotherapist SarahÌýBriggs, executive coaches Duncan Coppock andÌýMarion Gillie and coach supervisors BenitaÌýTreanor and Liz Ford. We feature contributionsÌýfrom coaches, coach-therapists and otherÌýpractitioners working in a variety of contexts –Ìýfrom private practice to HR and management toÌýeducation and healthcare – using a variety ofÌýapproaches, ranging from Gestalt therapy toÌýpositive psychology.

This is your resource, created for you. Use it toÌýcommunicate with each other – your peers, yourÌýcolleagues, those entering the field fromÌýcounselling and psychotherapy and otherÌýrelated professions, as well as those of you whoÌýare coming to this journal from an entirelyÌýdifferent background. Your contributions – yourÌýarticles, your letters, your news, your views,Ìýyour ideas, your dilemmas, your challenges, yourÌýsuccesses – are all welcome and will help shapeÌýthe future of this journal, the division and theÌýprofession itself. As our Chair Linda Aspey says inÌýher article: ‘We always knew it’s the relationshipÌýthat matters…’

So as the voice of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¾«×¼×ÊÁÏ Coaching and theÌýwider coaching arena, let’s see this journal as theÌýstart of a long, lively and in-depth conversation,Ìýfacilitating the relationship between each otherÌýand the profession we are part of.

I’m delighted to be on board, and I lookÌýforward to working with you all.
